Canadian sultry soul singer/songwriter Lady Phyl, daughter to musician/music producer Joby Baker, grew up in a musical family where funk, soul, r&b, and jazz fusion was always being played. Born to two young artistic parents, led to an unconventional upbringing of sleeping under tables at house jam parties, staying up way past bedtime in the front row of concerts, and being lulled to sleep by every type of music in her fathers studio. It’s no surprise that by the time she was 6 years old she was writing and co-producing her own music, rapping on stage in front of 1000 people at age 9, and was busking, gigging, and playing in bands by the age of 11. Over the years she has worked alongside her father, singing and writing backup vocals for countless artists, in styles ranging from new-age music mantras, to soul, folk, pop, and more. Throughout her life she has been inspired by nearly every genre, but Neo-soul, r&b, and hip hop is where she feels most at home. Artists like D’Angelo, Little Dragon, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Alex Isley, are a few artists that she looks to constantly for inspiration. Pulling from these inspirations you can find lots of vocal layering of harmonies, and counter melodies, as well as playing with trance-like rhythms in her music. Though she has never had any proper musical training, this complete immersion into music is where her strength, and creativity as an artist comes from.
As a solo artist I describe my music as sultry, soulful, rnb, pop. Vocal layering and playing with the rhythms of melodies is a huge part of my sound. I want to create a soundscape that is very trance-like, engaging, and something that moves your body for you. As a listener I love when music bring me into a complete world of sound, feeling, and aesthetic, and I strive to do the same with my own creations.
As a backing vocalist I take on many forms, on stage, in the studio, in english and in many other languages. I have had the pleasure to work alongside multiple artists in the studio by composing backing vocals that then the artist can either use as a guide, or keep as is. I have also been fortunate to join many artists as a backing vocalist for live performances, and tours.
